Premium Hoboken Concrete

Concrete built to hold up under everyday use in Hoboken, NJ

Premium Hoboken Concrete builds and repairs concrete for homeowners and small building owners, and we put the extra time into the base and drainage underneath, because that's what decides how a slab holds up.

Concrete work we do in Hoboken, NJ

Premium Hoboken Concrete is a concrete contractor in Hoboken, and since 2017 we've poured, raised and cut concrete for homeowners and small building owners across 12 cities. Most calls start with something sinking, cracking or holding water, or with a plan for something new, and the goal is a slab that drains and stays put. The price mostly moves with size and thickness, how much old concrete has to come out, how tight the spot is and the finish you pick. The schedule turns on whether the city needs a permit or another approval first, then on the wait before you can walk or drive on the new concrete. I'll give you the number for your own job at an on-site estimate.

Based in Hoboken, working the cities around it

Hoboken is a dense city of homes and small buildings on tight lots, and flooding is something it plans around. The City of Hoboken describes its Rebuild by Design work as a four-part plan to resist, delay, store and discharge water, so the city holds up better when it floods.

The city's ResilienCity Park adds more than 5 acres of park space and will manage up to 2 million gallons of stormwater to cut down on flooding. Sinatra Park has a kayak launch and an outdoor amphitheater, and Elysian Park has a dog run, a playground and basketball. We work out of Hoboken and the cities around it, and on these streets drainage is the first thing I look at before we pour.

What you get working with us

  • I look at your job myself

I come out to see every job in person and work out the tricky parts before anyone mixes concrete. Our crew lead then runs the work on site.

  • Estimates that show hidden work

Our estimates spell out the base, the drainage and the joints, the parts you can't see once the concrete is down. I'd rather spend an extra hour on those than explain later why a slab cracked.

  • City steps sorted before scheduling

We check with the city's office on what your job calls for and pull the permits that fall to us. If plans or another approval have to come first, you hear it before the job goes on the calendar.

Read how we got started, or tell us about your job and I'll come take a look.

Common concrete questions in Hoboken

Will my new concrete driveway crack like the old one did?

Some fine cracking is normal in any concrete, and I'll tell you that up front. What we control is where cracks go and how much they open, with a packed base that doesn't settle, control joints cut on time and the right thickness for the load. Most bad cracks I see on old slabs trace back to a base that was raked level instead of dug out, or joints that got skipped.

What happens before you pour a new patio or driveway?

We dig down to firm ground, pack the base and set the forms at the slope the water needs. The base is the part you won't see on day one and the first thing people want to trim from a budget. It's the one place I won't cut corners, because a slab settles right along with whatever is under it.

Does flooding in Hoboken change how you pour a slab?

It makes drainage the first thing we plan. Before we form anything, I check where water runs on your lot and slope the slab away from the house, since a slab that falls toward the house sends water right where you don't want it. The city says its current flood map is on the FEMA website, which is worth a look before bigger work.

What finish options are there for a concrete patio or walkway?

Most walks and driveways get the broom finish mentioned above for grip, and patios and pool decks can go further with stamped concrete, color or decorative concrete borders. Fancier finishes cost more and take more work to place. If the budget is tight, I'd put the money into the base first and the finish second.

Can you pour concrete on a tight Hoboken lot or inside a finished home?

Yes, tight lots, old stoops and cuts inside finished homes are the jobs we're known for. When a truck can't get close, we plan how the concrete gets from the street to the forms, and inside a house we protect the floors and keep dust down. I sort those details out on my visit, so the crew isn't working them out on pour day.

How long until I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

You'll walk on it well before you drive on it, because concrete keeps gaining strength for days after the pour. That wait is called curing, and rushing it leaves a weaker slab with a dusty top. I'll tell you the wait for your driveway at the estimate, so you know how long you'll be parking somewhere else.

Do I need a permit for concrete work in Hoboken?

It depends on the job, and some concrete work does need one. The city's Construction Code Office issues permits for new construction and additions, and its staff can help decide when you're not sure. Bigger work can also need plans or other approvals, such as historic, before a permit is issued. As noted above, we check that with the office before scheduling.

Does a concrete contractor need to be registered in New Jersey?

If they do home improvement work, yes. The state requires anyone in the business of home improvements to register with the Division of Consumer Affairs, and no city may issue a home improvement permit to a contractor who isn't registered. We're fully licensed and insured, and you can ask me about it when I come out.
